Otoplasty
Do your ears appear disproportionate to the rest of your facial features? Whether you have misshapen ears as a result of a deformity, traumatic accident, or genetic predisposition, you may benefit from a cosmetic procedure known as otoplasty. At The Center for Dermatology Care in Thousand Oaks, Dr. Aric Park has extensive experience performing otoplasty and has helped men, women, and children redefine the contours of their ears to obtain a more aesthetically pleasing and proportional look.
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a procedure designed to reduce the size of large ears or set prominent ears closer to the head. It is performed to correct ears that have structural abnormalities or those that protrude far from the head. The procedure is done on the auricle, the visible area of the outer ear. This area is composed of cartilage folds that are covered in skin.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and can take about one to three hours to complete. The process involves making an incision either on the back of the ear or inside the folds of the ear. Once the incision is made, we’ll make the necessary corrections to the cartilage and skin which may involve removing the tissue and reshaping the remaining cartilage.
Types of Otoplasty
There are different types of otoplasty procedures available to address the various types of issues that may arise with the ears. Ear augmentation is useful for those with small ears or ears that have not fully developed. This method is ideal for increasing the size of the outer ear. Ear pinning is another technique that involves bringing the ears closer to the head. This method is ideal for patients whose ears stick out far away from the head. Last but not least, ear reduction can help decrease the size of large ears to bring your facial proportions into balance.
Our team will assess your facial features and advise you on the best treatment to accommodate your individual needs.
Why Have an Otoplasty?
For many people, having enlarged ears that are disproportionate to the rest of their facial features can be a source of embarrassment and psychological distress. This is most prevalent in children who face ridicule on a daily basis due to their appearance. It can lead to low self-esteem, isolation, and a lack of confidence. Otoplasty can help bring the ears in balance and help those dealing with prominent ears experience a normal life.
Ideal Candidates for Otoplasty
Otoplasty is typically designed for ears that protrude from the head, are larger than normal, and have an unusual shape caused by a traumatic injury or birth defect. Ideal candidates for the procedure are at least 5 years of age, are in good physical health, and have realistic expectations. Patients should also be ready to follow any surgical instructions given to them.
