Christine Cole M.D.Hair loss or alopecia can be devastating at times – leading to anxiety, embarrassment and insecurity, which can affect both women and men. Some degree of hair loss occurs with aging; however the loss of hair is usually mild. Other types of hair loss are related to life events, such as the postpartum period in women, extreme stress such as a death in the family, a wedding, moving, major surgery and extreme weight loss. This type of hair loss is called Telogen Effluvium and is usually self-limited and reversible with time. A variety of medications can contribute to this type of hair loss, which can be reversed once the offending medication is stopped.

Another type of hair loss is inherited and is called patterned hair loss or Androgenetic Alopecia. Androgenetic Alopecia gradually worsens over time and is related to a testosterone derivative affecting the hair follicle at the cellular level.

All of these common forms of hair loss can be treated with over the counter Minoxidil, which stimulates more hairs to remain in the anagen or growing phase. All of our hairs are in varied stages of the hair cycle, which are the growing, resting, or shedding phases. There are a limited number of oral medications for this patterned type of hair loss; in men Propecia is the main one and in women it is Spironolactone. Both of these medical treatments help reduce the effects of the testosterone derivative on the hair follicle.

In addition to these medical treatments for hair loss, Doctor Andrew Kaufman is now performing a method of hair restoration that leaves no linear scar, involves very minimal down time, little to no discomfort and gives patients natural looking results, the NeoGraft Hair Transplantation System. The NeoGraft is an improved hair transplantation technique which is a surgical option. The NeoGraft Automated Hair Transplantation system removes individual hair follicles from the scalp in their naturally occurring groupings of about 1-4 hairs and are then placed in the areas of the scalp where balding has occurred. Dr. Kaufman has been doing hair transplants for 26 years, and is the Doctor you want to talk to if you have tried other medical options and are not seeing the results you have hoped for.

Along with medical and surgical options we also offer PRP injections into the scalp. This is a non-invasive procedure that is done with our facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Aric Park. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma which contains approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. In addition, it contains platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF) and other bioactive proteins that aid in wound healing and possibly hair growth. The platelets are full of stem cells which then promote growth factors, helping to stimulate the hair follicles. There is zero down time with this minor procedure with noticeable results.

Along with all these treatment options, the Center for Dermatology is also offering purchasing of the Capillus. The Capillus272 is a non-surgical, FDA approved, hair restoration option for men and women who suffer with thinning, shedding or balding hair. The Capillus is designed to reawaken dormant hair follicles and spur newer, fuller hair growth with comprehensive low level laser treatment (LLLT) exposure to the entire scalp. The Capillus has 272 FDA-approved low level laser diodes in a compact under-the-cap construction.
