Debbie’s Skin Care Corner: National Skin Care Month

Published on August 30, 2016

You may not be aware, but September is National Skin Care Awareness Month which means now is a good time to learn about your skin care needs and what products The Center for Dermatology Care offers to provide you with the best care for your skin. If you were unsure about how to address aging or problematic skin, don’t fret, we are here to help!

Having the right skin care products in your arsenal is an essential part to maintaining your skin’s health. But who has hours in their day to complete a 20 step process? Not us! Your morning routine requires only 5 steps, and your evening routine has 3, not to mention this can be applied to all skin types!

Your Morning Routine

  1. Cleanser – A good cleanser is the first step in a healthy skin care regimen. In order to prepare the skin to receive therapeutic ingredients, you want your skin free of dirt, makeup and other impurities.

One thing that separates Epionce cleansers from all other cleansers on the market is the unique ability to deeply clean without stripping the skin of natural oils that are necessary to keep the skin barrier healthy. This means the skin will be clean and fresh without feeling dry, tight or stripped.

These cleansers do not contain exfoliating beads, which damage the barrier and cause inflammation. Epionce is also free of parabens, sulfates, surfactants, fragrances, preservatives and gluten. However, Epionce does contain active, therapeutic ingredients. Epionce products are 92% botanical to gently unclog pores, calm inflammation, and won’t disrupt the skin barrier.

The Right Way to Cleanse: Avoid using washcloths or sponges. Our cleansers are designed to effectively cleanse dirt, makeup and oil. Washcloths and sponges can tear the skin barrier which results in inflammation. We recommend using clean hands and a double cleansing: wash face once to remove makeup, than wash a second time to clean skin. Some patients prefer using one cleanser to remove makeup, such as the Milky Lotion Cleanser, and a different cleanser for the second cleanse, such as the Gentle Foaming Cleanser or Lytic Gel Cleanser.

  3. Toner – Toners have become increasingly less common in the skin care regimen, and for many people it is now a matter of personal preference. The truth is these products can still play an important role in your skin care routine. Epionce has created two toners, the Purifying Toner and Re-Balance Toner. They can provide extra clarifying benefits to prepare your skin for the remaining regimen. It targets to help boost results for specific skin conditions and concerns. These toners are formulated with anti-inflammatory ingredients to calm redness and fight oil.

  4. Anti-Aging Serum – All human cells have nutritional needs to function properly, skin cells are human cells. Proper nutrition is required for healthy function and to produce the best skin rejuvenation results. Just as you ingest healthy food for internal health, it is essential to use topical products that provide nutrition for your skin cells. Using Epionce’s Intense Defense Serum every day is like taking a multivitamin to supplement the nutrients that even a well-balanced diet lacks.

You will find the following vitamins in this amazing Serum:

    • Vit A – Essential for normal cell growth and function. Helps to modulate collagen synthesis, and improve skin texture, firmness and smoothness, resulting in a more youthful skin appearance.
    • Vit B – Helps to reduce sensitivity to UV light by normalizing keratinocyte size function. Improves the skin barrier function, and normalizes cell metabolism.
    • Vit C – Helps to prevent damage to cell membranes from oxidation, and necessary for collagen production. Provides photo-protective properties, effective as a skin brightener, and used extensively for treatment of visible aging.
    • Vit D – Significantly affects epidermal cell turnover to improve skin hydration, feel, texture and firmness. Also boosts cell immunity and balance protective inflammation, and to help prevent skin cancer.
    • Vit E – Considered the most important oil-soluble antioxidant and free radical scavenger. Provides photo-protection, protects cell structure, enhances barrier function, and improves the appearance of rough, dry, damaged skin.

  5. Moisturizer – How does the Renewal Facial Moisturizer product line differ from drugstore and department store moisturizers? Most drugstore moisturizers do little more for the skin than make the skin feel better on the surface. Many general retail products purchased at a drugstore or department stores do not have a delivery system that penetrates the stratum corneum, or skin barrier, without causing barrier disruption or triggering inflammatory factors.

    • Renewal Facial Moisturizer products gently deliver active ingredients deeper into the epidermis where there is optimal therapeutic benefit to the skin, with minimal barrier disruption. Key ingredients are: Meadowfoam, Flax, Date, Apple, Rosa Canina, Safflower, and Avocado.

    • Intensive Nourishing Cream
      • Potato peptide and hydrolyzed yeast peptide – Botanically-derived barrier lipid generators maximally rebuild and fortify the skin’s natural protective barrier.
      • Ursolic and Azelaic Acid – Deliver specific active ingredients to deeper cell layers, effectively strengthening and regenerating the skin’s collagen and elastin matrix while visibly reducing hyperpigmentation.
      • Avocado, Meadowfoam, Safflower and Flax – Continue enhancing the repair of the skin barrier.
      • Date, Apple and Meadowfoam – Provide anti-inflammatory properties to block the formation and activation of destructive chronic inflammatory factors. Ideal for day or night use face, neck and décolletage.

  6. Sunscreen – It’s been my experience that you will use sunscreen if you like the way it feels. Most over the counter sunscreens, are thick, pore clogging, and smell like a sunscreen. We have over 25 different sunscreens for you to try. We have some that have antioxidants for anti-aging and some that are tinted that can be used instead of make-up. Come in and let us find out which sunscreen is for your skin’s type and needs.

Your Evening Routine

  1. Cleanser – It’s important to use a cleanser in the evening that’s going to remove make-up, pollution, sweat and sunscreen from the day. We have several cleansers that will not only remove the day’s dirt and oil, but won’t strip the skin of its necessary oils. The Lytic Gel Cleanser and Revision’s Papaya Enzyme Cleanser are two excellent cleansers that we carry.

  2. Exfoliants Other than Retinols, which can be prescribed by one of our Doctors, the Lytic products are a core part of the Epionce product line. All of the Lytic products incorporate two of the Epionce ingredient technologies: Anti-Inflammatory Technology and Keratolytic Technology. The Lytic products help prevent the action and formation of damaging chronic inflammatory factors, the common cause underlying many skin conditions and diseases.

They combine a powerful botanical formulation with a unique delivery system to optimally clean out pores, remove blackheads, whiteheads and other mild to moderate acne lesions. Lytics gently remove dead skin cells at the skin’s surface without aggravating inflammatory skin conditions affected by barrier disruption or vigorous exfoliating formulas.

Key Benefits: Decreased redness, skin irritation and skin scales. Creating a smoother skin contour, less noticeable pores and scars with a reduction of bumps, blackheads, whiteheads and other acne blemishes as ingredients reduce all four microbes and the yeast know to impact acne.

    • Salicylic Acid – Has strong anti-inflammatory, keratolytic and anti-microbial benefits. It is known to be effective on oily and acne-prone skin types.
    • Azelaic Acid – Provides anti-inflammatory properties. It is known to stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis. It also has depigmenting effects through tyrosinase inhibition.
    • Azelaic acid – Known to be effective on rosacea.
    • Willow Bark Extract – Provides anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It also provides keratolytic and depigmenting effects.
    • Zinc Pyrithionehas – Strong anti-bacterial properties. It is known to be effective on eczema, psoriasis and dandruff.

  3. Moisturizer – Moisturizers are a very important part to the end of your routine. Even if you’re oily, you need the right moisture content to aid in proper hydration. Especially if you’re using topical acne medication.
Remember, it is never too late to start good beauty habits.
With proper guidance, the right products with application, you are sure to see visible results.
