ThermiRase™: A Longer-Lasting Botox Alternative

Facial wrinkles and furrows are frequently caused by the movement of muscles beneath the skin. These “dynamic” wrinkles are most noticeable between the eyebrows (“frown lines”) and near the eyes (“smile lines” or “crows’ feet”). Botox® and Dysport® work in these areas by inhibiting the transmission of signals from motor nerves to the muscles causing these wrinkles. These chemical neuromodulators usually work for 3-4 months before another treatment is necessary.

A new procedure is available that treats the same problems, shows results immediately, lasts much longer and avoids the injection of a toxin. The new procedure is referred to as ThermiRase™ and uses a Symphony RF radiofrequency device to ablate or injure the nerve. The effects last up to 18 months (i.e. up to 6 times longer than Botox® and Dysport®), and the procedure usually takes less than one hour.

How Does Symphony RF Work and Other Questions…

Symphony RF is a radiofrequency device manufactured by Thermigen Inc. that is FDA approved for nerve ablation. Radiofrequency has been used for years in cardiology, dermatology and pain management . The Symphony RF system is used to perform ThermiRase™, a minimally invasive procedure that uses the heat generated by radiofrequency to target specific tissues. In nerve ablation that specific target is the motor nerve causing dynamic facial wrinkles.

On the day of the procedure the nerve is mapped out using an external nerve stimulator. A small RF probe is placed beneath the skin, and the location of the nerve is confirmed through low energy stimulation. After the precise location is determined radiofrequency is delivered for a specific time and temperature, disrupting the function of the nerve that creates dynamic wrinkles.

Some patients still use Botox or Dysport in conjunction with ThermiRase™as both techniques work through different mechanisms of action. Some feel that use of both techniques provide a more complete and longer lasting result. In those cases the ThermiRase procedure needs to be performed before Botox or Dysport injections.

ThermiSculpt™: Subdermal Tissue Tightening and Sculpting

Symphony RF is a radiofrequency device manufactured by Thermigen Inc. and FDA approved for nerve ablation that is now being used in a minimally invasive procedure referred to as ThermiSculpt™. This technique uses radiofrequency to deliver a precise temperature through a small probe, targeting and destroying fat cells and tightening the overlying skin. The temperature is constantly monitored at the tip of the radiofrequency probe as well as on the skin surface to provide the optimum temperature for treatment and to decrease risk to the surrounding tissue.

Treatment is generally performed using a dilute local anesthetic, and the procedure is completed within 2 hours. Results are usually noticeable immediately, but final results may require several weeks. Most areas are improved significantly with one treatment, but some locations or areas with significant localized fat or significant skin laxity may require more than one treatment.

If you would like to learn more about the procedure, please speak with one of our friendly staff to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kaufman or call (805) 497-1694.
