The Hair Facts

Hair grows from a tiny opening in the skin called a follicle, which contains the hair root, the muscle attached to it and oil glands. These follicles hold and produce every hair on the body, and on average, most people have approximately 100,000 hairs just on their head. Hair continually cycles through periods of growth and rest, with some shedding at the end of the resting cycle. Normal loss is between 50 to 100 hairs a day.

Reasons for Hair Loss

Hair loss and thinning can be temporary or permanent. Stress, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, normal breakage (damage from bleaching, coloring, perming, excessive styling, the sun) and nutritional deficiencies are sometimes factors, and generally, are reversible with appropriate treatment. Sometimes, however, hair loss is permanent.

Environmental or physiological changes can influence the growth cycle and create the potential for hair loss. The genetic predisposition in both men and women for pattern baldness or hair loss is medically known as androgenetic alopecia, and is the cause of more than 95% of hair loss.

Androgenetic alopecia carries with it a trait which can be inherited from either parent. Due to this trait, cells in certain hair follicles are receptive to hormone changes, and in time, those hormones cause the follicles to grow hair for a shorter time. When the normal lifespan of hair growth is shortened, the hair may fall out sooner than it naturally would. What was once a long, healthy hair is soon replaced by a miniaturized version. This contributes to the thin hair appearance of hair loss. Genetic programming of hair follicle cells and the exposure and receptiveness of the cells to hormones in the blood over a long period of time cause pattern hair loss.

For men, the typical pattern of loss starts at the hairline, advances to thinning on the top of the head, and often leaves a perimeter of hair across the back of the head. In women, hair loss typical involves overall thinning.

With pattern hair loss, many of our patients in Southern California choose hair transplant surgery and/or medications which focus on activating hair growth stimulators and blocking hair growth inhibitors.
