Southern California Hair Transplant Surgery

For the men and women with noticeable natural hair loss, there is only one permanent solution: to grow back their own hair naturally through hair transplantation. With more than 200,000 hair replacement procedures performed in the United States each year, it continues to be the most popular cosmetic procedure for men.

Hair restoration surgery is a safe, minor surgical procedure that removes a section of growing hair from the back of the head or donor site. From the donor graft, micro or mini-grafts of one to four hairs are prepared and then transplanted to the balding areas.

Hair transplantation is performed with local anesthesia and may be repeated over several sessions to produce the most natural-looking hair re-growth. Dermatologic surgeons have introduced advanced techniques, dramatically improving hair transplantation results.

It is important to realize that since pattern baldness is a progressive condition, hair loss will continue. Since the degree of future hair loss is not known, Dr. Kaufman uses the donor hair carefully and conservatively, providing increased flexibility for additional future transplant procedures, if necessary.

Your Evaluation

At your consultation, Andrew J. Kaufman, MD, evaluates the quantity of lost hair and assesses the condition of your hair, skin, and scalp. Factors including age, degree of hair loss, type of hair (color and texture), and available donor hair allow Dr. Kaufman to determine if underlying environmental causes or other reasons are impacting hair loss or breakage. For many patients, also taken into account are expectations – and how well a particular option fits in with your lifestyle. In consideration of each patient’s particular situation, a treatment plan is recommended.

Other Options

The over-the-counter medication Rogaine® (minoxidil) acts as a hair growth stimulator, and is often used in conjunction with hair replacement. It is somewhat effective in enlarging the miniaturized follicles to improve the growth phase of the hair cycle. For many patients it may prove beneficial, especially in reducing the degree of hair loss. The use of Rogaine is an ongoing process, with results ceasing upon discontinuance.

Propecia® (finasteride) is the first FDA approved oral prescription for treating pattern hair loss by suppressing the hormone that shrinks scalp hair follicles. This therapy is often used in conjunction with hair replacement therapy with minimal side effects. It was originally prescribed to treat enlargement of the prostate by shutting down the enzyme that converts the hormone testosterone in DHT. By reducing DHT production, finasteride appears to suppress the hormone that shrinks scalp hair follicles. As a result, for many men, it may help re-grow hair. Usage must continue to maintain benefits.
